  The Japanese are thinking "The sun is red (A-KA)". In the picture which is drawn by Japanese children, the sun is colored in reds. However, the European, American and Chinese say, "The sun is yellow". I was also surprised to talk with the international students about it. Are eyes of the Japanese different than other country's eyes ? In Japan, is a color of the sun different than other country's color ?
  According to one theory, "A-KA" meant "AKARUI (bright)" in ancient Japan. Therefore, "The sun is A-KA(red)" meant that the sun is AKARUI(bright). And before one knows, a pronunciation of "A-KA" changed to the meaning of the color of red, so "The sun is A-KA" changed to "The sun is red".
  How do you consider about it ? We usually tend to think and talk in our own free will. However I think our thinking and looking are restricted by the spoken language. You can acquire the new thinking that is not limited by your native language if you learn the foreign language, and it provides you new points of view and new outlook on the life. I believe that to study the foreign language gives you a fruitful life.

   日本人は「太陽は赤い」と考えます。日本の幼稚園などではよく子供たちが太陽を赤く描いた絵が貼られています。 しかし、中国人や欧米の人は「太陽は黄色い」と言います。 私自身、留学生と話をしていてこれには驚いた経験があります。 日本人の目は他の国の人の目と違うのでしょうか。 あるいは日本の太陽の色は他の国の色と違うということなのでしょうか。
   これにはこのような一説があります。 古代の日本語では「アカ」は明るいという意味であり、「太陽はアカ」というのは｢太陽は明るい｣という意味でした。 しかしこの「アカ」がいつしか「赤」という色の名前に転用されていき、「太陽はアカ」が「太陽は赤い」とされたということです。
   これはどういうことでしょうか。私たちは普段、自由にものを考えそして話していると思いがちです。 しかし、私たちのものの見方、考え方は実は話している言語によって規定されていると言えます。 私たちは自分では気がつかないまま、その言語の枠の中でものを見たり考えたりしているのです。 外国語を学ぶということは自分の母国語の中で枠組みされていたものの見方、考え方とは別の見方、考え方を身につけるということです。 つまり、多角的な見方や考え方ができるようになり自分の世界観が広がるのです。 外国語を学ぶことによって、柔軟性を身につけたり可能性を広げたりすることができます。 若い皆さんにとってはより実りある人生を切り拓くことになることにつながるでしょう。
